Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s public conflict grew out of the end of their marriage and competing accounts of abuse. Heard alleged that Depp had been physically and verbally abusive during the relationship. Depp denied abusing Heard and later argued that her allegations damaged his reputation and career. Their divorce settlement briefly ended the immediate court fight, but it did not end the wider public dispute.

The conflict became publicly visible in May 2016, when Heard obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp during their divorce. She alleged in court filings that he had abused her and that one argument ended with him throwing a phone at her face. Depp’s side denied the allegations and argued that Heard was using them to gain financial advantage. The divorce was finalized in January 2017, with Heard dismissing her request for a continued restraining order as part of the settlement.

The dispute escalated again in December 2018, when The Washington Post published Heard’s op-ed about sexual violence and domestic abuse. The article did not name Depp, but it included the line that she had become “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp sued Heard for defamation in Virginia in 2019, arguing that the op-ed clearly referred to him and repeated allegations he said were false. Heard denied defaming Depp and later countersued, saying Depp had defamed her through statements made by his lawyer Adam Waldman, including claims that her abuse allegations were a “hoax.”

A separate UK libel case added another turning point. Depp sued News Group Newspapers and Dan Wootton over a Sun article that called him a “wife beater.” In 2020, the High Court in London dismissed Depp’s claim, finding that the publisher had shown the article was substantially true under the civil standard, meaning more likely than not. Soon after that ruling, Warner Bros. asked Depp to leave the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The US case then became the central public arena for the conflict. In June 2022, a Virginia jury found Heard liable for defaming Depp in three statements from the op-ed and awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages plus punitive damages later reduced under Virginia law. The jury also found Depp liable through Waldman on one of Heard’s counterclaims and awarded Heard $2 million.

Both sides appealed parts of the Virginia verdict, but they settled in December 2022. The settlement included a $1 million payment to Depp to resolve financial claims, and Depp’s lawyers said the money would be donated to charity. Heard said the settlement was not a concession and that she had agreed to no restrictions on future speech. There is no known active legal case between Depp and Heard now, but the dispute remains a major reference point in public conversations about celebrity litigation, domestic abuse allegations, defamation law and social media reaction.
