Angelina Jolie vs Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt began their relationship in the mid-2000s, married in 2014 and shared six children. They also jointly owned Château Miraval, a French estate and winery that later became the subject of a separate business lawsuit.

In September 2016, an alleged incident occurred on a private flight involving Pitt and the children. Days later, Jolie filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and her lawyer said the decision was made for the family’s health. Jolie later alleged that Pitt had behaved abusively during the flight. Pitt denied the abuse allegations, and he was not charged after authorities investigated.

Jolie and Pitt agreed in 2017 to use a private judge for much of the divorce. A court declared them legally single in 2019, but custody, finances and other issues continued.

In 2021, the private judge reportedly gave Pitt more custody time. A California appeals court later removed that judge because he had not fully disclosed professional ties to Pitt’s lawyers, keeping the custody dispute active.

In September 2021, Jolie sold her Château Miraval stake to a company linked to the Stoli Group. Pitt sued in February 2022, claiming that they had agreed not to sell their shares without the other person’s approval. Jolie’s side said the sale followed failed negotiations between them.

Jolie filed a countersuit in October 2022 and included detailed allegations about Pitt’s behaviour during the 2016 flight. Pitt denied the allegations. The filing connected the winery dispute to the breakup, proposed nondisclosure terms and competing demands for private communications and legal documents.

Jolie and Pitt reached a divorce settlement in December 2024 after more than eight years of proceedings. That agreement ended the divorce case but did not resolve the separate Château Miraval lawsuit.

The Miraval case remains active. In May 2026, Jolie won a ruling blocking the release of certain private messages after the court found that Pitt’s side had not overcome attorney-client privilege. The court has not issued a final ruling on the parties’ competing ownership and contract claims.
