Ticketmaster Taylor Swift Ticketing Controversy

Taylor Swift announced the Eras Tour in November 2022, creating extraordinary demand for tickets. Ticketmaster used its Verified Fan registration system for the presale. Swift later said her team had repeatedly asked whether the platform could handle the expected traffic and had been assured that it could.

When the presale opened on November 15, millions of people tried to enter at once. The platform slowed, queues stopped moving and buyers encountered error messages or unusable access codes. Some waited for hours before seats became unavailable.

Ticketmaster paused parts of the presale as traffic overwhelmed the platform. It said more than two million tickets were sold that day and that about 15 percent of site interactions experienced problems. Two days later, it cancelled the planned general public sale because too few tickets remained.

Swift said it was painful to watch fans struggle and that she would not make excuses for the company. Ticketmaster apologised and attributed the disruption to unprecedented numbers of verified users, heavy traffic and automated bot attacks.

In December 2022, Swift fans sued Live Nation and Ticketmaster in California, alleging fraud, price-fixing and antitrust violations. Those allegations were disputed and were not findings when filed. Ticketmaster later invited selected Verified Fans who had not secured tickets to request up to two seats through a limited second-chance process.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing in January 2023 examining the failed sale and competition in live-event ticketing. Live Nation executive Joe Berchtold apologised to Swift and her fans and said bot activity contributed to the disruption. In 2024, Minnesota enacted ticketing rules requiring mandatory fees to be disclosed upfront and restricting practices such as duplicate listings.

The presale failure did not prevent the Eras Tour from proceeding, but claims arising from the sale continued through court. In November 2025, a federal judge allowed most claims brought by approximately 350 ticket buyers to proceed, including antitrust, consumer-protection and contract claims, while dismissing fraud and negligence claims.

That ruling did not determine whether the remaining allegations were true. It allowed the buyers to continue pursuing them. The ticket sale itself has ended, but the related consumer lawsuit remains active and the controversy is legally unresolved.
